he'd been muttering to himself since i got on the bus. i made a mental note to avoid getting into a conversation with him, because insane people tend to make me feel quite uncomfortable. but then he dropped his green hilighter. he didn't seem to notice so i picked it up for him. he was thrilled. he muttered (happily) about it for ages, then held up a sign he had saying "thanks!". i smiled and nodded, then made a point of looking vaguely pre-occupied and in no way up for a conversation.
a few minutes later he shouts out "gadzooks!". the bus driver had decided not to wait for the person running for the bus. he asked me if i understood it. i said i didn't. then i told him i was thrilled to hear him say gadzooks. he wanted to know why, and i lied and said i just like the word. i considered explaining about my short-lived and poorly implemented plan to encourage the use of the word, but decided against it.
of course he read this mini-conversation as an invite to move to my side of the bus and take out his eyore hand-puppet. i couldn't believe my luck. sure, i'd wound up talking to the differently-socialized person on the bus again, but this one says gadzooks! & carries around a hand-puppet.
i was marveling at the swimming goggles he'd added, and listened as he told me about his old job. he used to put on puppet shows to warn children about the stranger-danger. he's very passionate about the safety of children, and permanently distressed about child molestors. somewhere in there he asked me how the year had been so far, and i said it was good, much better than the last so far. he was delighted to hear it. he said that it's the first year, and it's going to be great. a clean slate for us all!
