i could never have known how appropriate my blog title would be.
my first night in dakar i was pretty wacked from about 25hrs of travelling. there was no immediately obvious way to string up my mosquito net, so i just draped it over myself, and fell asleep right away. about 4hrs later i awoke to a deafening roar. i sat bolt up right, and prepared to meet my death. i was vaguely curious about where the hell i was, and why i was tangled in some sort of net, but those questions seemed insignificant in the circumstances.
lisa had mentioned that our place was 3 mins from the airport, and that the planes were quite loud, but i'd forgotten about it, and my natural assumption was that the sky was falling. or perhaps being torn off by a furious god. the whole scenario was unfolding excatly the way i used to imagined it would when the aliens finally came to annialate the human race. it would be sudden and incomprehensible to us, and then we would be dead.
and i have to say that all those years i spent as a child preparing myself for such a catastrophe really paid off. i just sat there in awe. i thought, "wow!" and "so loud". it didn't occur to me to investigate or run or anything. i was pretty zen about the whole thing.
the next thing you know, the noise was gone and i was still alive. it was a bit confusing, but i was too tired to think about it. soon afterwards i mistook the sound of the mosque for a giant mosquito in my room. it was disconcerting, but after escaping death a giant mosquito just didn't seem worth fussing over.
morning delivered a clearer perspective on everything. and everyone tells me that i'll get used to it pretty soon. the sky is always falling, and in a few weeks i won't even notice.

i'm proud to present the product of my post flashforward2000 frenzy! i made this little jukebox (also accessible from the nav). some of the tracks were compressed a bit aggressively, so my apologies to your ears and the bands for that.
i guess you could say that I'm a little obsessed with the idea of helping bands to get their music out into the world. i'd pointed a friend at mothman's website to check out their music before their show. a few minutes later i got a note from her saying "how can it start streaming right away, and it sounds so good, and you don't even have to leave the browser?". and i thought, yeah, that is a nice little piece of functionality. so i set about making a jukebox that bands could use on their own sites without even having to touch flash themselves.
it needs a little more work before it's fully customisable (mainly just visual stuff). but as soon as it is i'll put up the swf and fla files for people to use. drop me a note if you want to know when it's ready.
